I remember watching this. This is 100% the OPPOSITE of what he said recently on his show, acting like he was “Forced” and never wanted to give it up. Two faced liar…

@lolitathebitch A man has to have pride in his work and himself. After taking second billing for years this was his time so I don’t fault him for not wanting to go backwards. NBC made the deal in the first place because they wanted to keep him and not have him compete against them. They couldn’t make it work out in the end but Conan did nothing wrong in choosing his best interests. If it wasn’t for Leno’s snow he’d have been competive against Dave, who had a loyal base already at the timeslot.

as a result, Conan’s ratings go way up. I believe again that every comedian in the world would have made fun of Conan. Conan’s Savior…Hey Conan, don’t forget to thank Jay…If it wasn’t for him, you would be collecting unemployment insurance…lol I believe Conan preferred getting fired than going through that humiliation. It’s sad bc I think he missed an opportunity to improve as a stand up comedian..He missed an opportunity to be recognize as one of best. Oh well, I guess that’s life.

I know my Dad used to watch Carson, but I have no recollection of him whatsoever. Anyway, imagine this scenario…Conan accepts the time switch to 12:05. He tells his fan during his show that due to low ratings, his show will be at 12:05. He goes on to say that Jay will have his show at 11:35, in the hope that it will boost his (Conan) ratings. Every comedian in the world would have made fun of him..lol And, imagine this scenario…Jay’s show becomes a huge success..and…continued…

    So this was in 2004?

It would’ve been the Jay Leno Show at 1135 and the Conan O’Brien Show at 1205, not the Tonight Show (opinion). I agree it was a pride of sorts. The Tonight Show gig is HUGE. He basically was crowned by getting that show. That’s what he moved out here for… and ended up with something else. He wanted the big one he was given, and wouldn’t accept less. He had pride in that show, absolutely. I’d have done the same thing, thinking that Jay would do the honorable thing based on his words.

Jay is human, which is why he couldn’t keep a promise. Jay never wanted to be replaced, therefore he shouldn’t have gone on TV and said these words (he admitted to Oprah it was a white lie). His words are binding as far as integrity is concerned. But in the business world, well, there is no integrity. Were you a Johnny Carson fan? You look young so maybe not. I was. Johnny Carson fans and I’ll bet even Jay would agree that moving to 1205 is not the Tonight Show anymore.

That’s when he decided to force NBC to fire him, by making all those nasty statements about NBC on the air. Conan didn’t want Jay to be seen as “Conan’s Savior” in the media. It was misplaced pride!!! Conan said it would be destructive to the late night show if it was moved back at 12:05. That is just nonsense. It is quite normal to make changes to a business over the years, but business does change. Simple bc people change. Conan simply messed up. I wish good luck though.

Ya but Jay is a human being. He never wanted to be replaced, especially not at number one. But, forget that…Conan could have saved hos job had he agreed to be moved at 12:05. NBC had all the rights to ask that, bc it was stipulated in his contract. Check it out. Conan was too proud to agree to that, bc had he agreed, Jay would have had his show at 11:35. As a result, Conan’s ratings would have increased, probably a great deal. Conan didn’t want Jay to get the credit for that..so..continued

The power Jay had was to say no. I’d agree with everything you said here, if this video never happened. Without this video, the ratings/business argument stands. But this video is damning for Jay. And I’m not biased. I’ve watched and enjoyed Jay for 17 years.

One thing is undeniable and that is that the ratings plummeted to almost 50% when Conan took over the late show. What kind of power did Jay have over the situation? The NBC had all the power, even to fire Jay and terminate his contract…the same thing they did with Conan actually. I think the truth lies in the middle. It was a strategic mistake to replace Jay, and he was more than happy to take his old show back. Nothing wrong with that.

What a hypocritical bastard. His ratings will suck balls now because he is such a fucking d-bag selfish prick! CONAN RULES!

Leno is not the king of late night, he cannot hold a candle to Johnny Carson. Get it NBC???
Conan was taking the show in to new heights, and now it’s back to the same boring schtick! Screw NBC, Team Coco FTW!!

NBC execs were retarded!! they knew they could’ve said no to leno. in fact they could’ve negotiated but no one was willing to compromise as least conan did the honorable thing to keep the tonight show what it is. all NBC cares about is its ratings. what a bunch of pigs!

Don’t worry people, when Conan gets back on the air, he’s going to stomp Leno into the ground. Leno’s audience is getting old, really fast.
